What is PVC leather?

PVC leather, short for Polyvinyl Chloride, is the less expensive and more widely available alternative. Vinyl, a flexible plastic resin, is chemically altered to create it. It is usually mixed with a variety of fillers to alter the texture, color, form, and effects to fit various leather goods. This makes it ideal for usage in imitation leather furniture and fashion.

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) vs Polyurethane (PU)

Durability
- Of the two, PVC leather is more durable because it has a foam layer. PU leather, however, is thin. PU leather is mainly developed for its flexibility. It is why PU is often used in clothing.
  PU is also likely to wrinkle over time. On the other hand, PVC leather can stand extreme weather and wear and tear.
Breathability
- PU leather, being thinner, offers better breathability compared to PVC leather, which has multiple layers that hinder airflow. This quality makes PU leather more suitable for clothing items like jackets. Additionally, PU leather features more pores than PVC, enhancing its suitability for apparel projects.
- However, these pores also make PU leather more absorbent, rendering it susceptible to stains. Consequently, furniture manufacturers often opt for PVC leather, which is both less porous and more durable. The durability of PVC leather, attributed to its layered composition and absence of pores, makes it an ideal choice for upholstery and shoes, both of which endure significant wear and tear.
- In contrast, PU leather, with its flexibility and breathability, remains the preferred choice for clothing applications.
